Bracteantha

This is a neat little flower that is commonly called the “straw flower.” It looks and feels like paper, and even after it is long-dead, the bloom retains its shape and most of its color, much like dried straw.

I work for a wholesale floriculture grower in NC, and a while back I took my camera to the greenhouses and had some fun! I’ll be posting various pictures from the greenhouses over the next little while. I’ll try to be posting more frequently.

Fisheye’d Cat

Sorry for my lack of activity on this blog. I’ve been busy with a new job, and I just haven’t been around enough for my camera 😥 I am preparing a series of photos for the coming week, though! This week, fisheye’d stuff!

End of the Line

The Stratosphere has a couple of “rides” on top of the tower. In this one, people ride in a rollercoaster-type car that stops at the end of that rail–and then plunges towards the ground. Two pictures this time! (Tech notes: I really don’t like the noise level in these; that’s a problem that I’m finding with this camera. At ISO 800 and 1600, there really shouldn’t be this much noise. I might try some noise tests with a RAW later.)

Distance

The Stratosphere in Las Vegas is, like everything else, a hotel and casino, but it also has a tall Space Needle-like tower that tourists can ascend and see the city. The view really is quite impressive. If you can see the strange streak-looking light three-quarters of the way into the picture from the left, you’re looking at the light from the Luxor hotel–a pyramid-shaped casino in the middle of the city. The light is the brightest beam in the world, at 42.3 billion candela (lumens). At 315 kilowatts, that’s an expensive light bill!

Vegas Petals

The reason I didn’t post at all last week is because I was in Las Vegas (thoughts here). This is a shot in front of Ceasar’s Palace. Most of my images this week will probably be Vegas-city-themed, but don’t worry, I stayed away from all the racy stuff (as much as I could).
